Busy Summer Days

I’m  new at this business. I started a couple of years ago, by making books for family members. I started with lines of poetry and illustrations. I was trying to figure out a way to make multiple copies of the same book by hand. For a while I made paper collages, and that was fun. But one day, eureka, it came to me. Illustrations can be duplicated using block prints. And I was off.

Here’s a picture, illustrating Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken:

Road not taken 2

After experiments with linoleum, I discovered a soft rubbery material to carve, so easy that it is like drawing except with carving tools instead of a pencil — and also except that the image comes out backwards and reversed. It’s such a blast to take that first test print, to see just how the marks take the ink.

Here’s something I’ve been working on this week.

Maillol 1

linocut depicting Nymph by Aristide Maillol

Inspired by this quote by the French sculptor Aristide Maillol:

“A model? A model? What in the hell would I do with a model? When I need to check something I go to my wife and lift her chemise.”

Welcome to my blog where I write about the art and craft of my business. My goal is to make beautiful things, to make art part of everyday life, and to make my friends and family smile. Not necessarily in that order.
